Anti-Oil Shale Demonstration

Greenpeace activists wear protective gear as they prepare for a demonstration against oil shale drilling in the Golan Heights, in front of the Israeli Supreme Court in Jerusalem, on December 23, 2014. The High Court of Justice convened today to discuss a petition filed by environmentalists and a group of local residents, demanding the repeal of exploratory drilling plans. The plans, approved by the Northern District Committee for Planning and Building in July, are set to be conducted by Afek Oil and Gas, a subsidiary of the New Jersey-based Genie Energy Ltd. and include the drilling of 10 exploratory wells over three years in the southeastern portion of the Golan Heights in northern Israel, at a cost of $25-$30 million.
